Security-Alert: Active links in Messenger 2009 temporarily turned off to prevent a malicious worm!

A particularly malicious worm (a self-replicating computer virus) is currently trying to spread itself through many of the world’s largest instant messaging and social networks, including Windows Live Messenger 2009. We’re very serious about protecting our customers, and are pursuing multiple avenues to help stop its progress. The worm spreads by inserting a link into an IM conversation with a person whose computer is already infected. When someone clicks the link, it opens in a browser, downloads the worm on the recipient’s computer, and then repeats this process.

Normally, when Messenger sees a web address in a conversation it is turned into a hyperlink which, when clicked, automatically opens in a web browser. This feature makes it very easy for the malicious worm to be unknowingly installed on your computer by clicking on the link and being sent to a web site containing the malicious software. We’re pursuing a number of activities to help protect you, working actively with industry experts and law enforcement to help stop this criminal activity.

Most notably, we’ve temporarily turned off active hyperlinks for web addresses sent in IM conversations using Windows Live Messenger 2009. You will still be able to copy a web address and paste it into a browser window if you know it to be safe, but by removing active hyperlinks from Messenger 2009, we’re taking a significant step towards stopping the unintentional spreading of this worm.

Because we’ve now blocked active links in Messenger 2009, starting today, some customers may also see a notification in the main Messenger window warning them that some features might not be available.

Messenger 2011 is not impacted in the same way, thanks to its Link Safety feature. However, we are actively monitoring the situation and investigating different approaches to help protect customers using the latest version of Messenger, should the situation change.

As always, we encourage customers to exercise caution with links to web pages that you receive in IMs, especially if the links are to a web page that you are not familiar with, unsure of the destination of, or suspicious of. Malicious software may be installed in your computer simply by visiting a web page with harmful conteaqnt.

“If you think your computer may have already been infected by a malicious worm, check the , please visit the Source Security TechCenter on Microsoft TechNet, and then download and use the Source malicious software removal tool. DJ Ironik stabbed by muggers who ‘tracked him on Twitter’

Rapper DJ Ironik stabbed by muggers who ‘tracked his movements on Twitter’

Rapper DJ Ironik was stabbed by muggers after they tracked his movements on Twitter.
The musician, 22, was wounded in the upper leg outside his London home in the early hours of Saturday morning after returning from a gig in Essex.
It is believed the two hooded men had targeted DJ Ironik after he boasted about the price of his diamond-encrusted neck chain during a recent TV interview.

Attacked: DJ Ironik, pictured two weeks ago at the Radio 1 studios in London, is recovering in hospital from stab wounds.

After being discharged from hospital this afternoon after spending most of the weekend in hospital, Ironik thanked fans for their support.

He wrote on his Twitter page today: ‘Wow. Thank you everyone for all the love & supportive messages.. I have just been discharged from the hospital.

Its been a crazy last couple of days and this whole experience is quite surreal. But they say what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.
‘I wanna thank each and every one of my friends, family and supportive fans that have showed me lots of much love!
‘It could of been much worse so thank God it weren’t and I’m just resting and recovering… Love.’

On the mend: DJ Ironik thanked his fans for their support after being discharged from hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Ironik, real name James Charters, was returning to his Haringey, north London home with his tour manager when two men pounded at 3am.
He threw his chain and other jewellery on the path and ran towards his front door, but was stabbed in the thigh.
From Ironik’s Twitter page, they knew he would be going home after performing at the Element nightclub in Southend-On-Sea, Essex.

Before the attack, he had re-tweeted a photo of himself performing on stage to the 1,500-strong crowd.

A police spokesman said it was believed the motivation behind the attack was robbery, but said most of the jewellery taken has since been recovered. A statement from his management company said: ‘Ironik was attacked and stabbed in the early hours of Saturday morning during an attempted robbery whilst returning to his home in North London. He was stabbed in his upper leg, taken to hospital and is currently being treated. He is understandably shaken up by this unprovoked attack.’

Crowd pleaser: The attack happened just a few hours after DJ Ironik performed at the Element nightclub in Southend-On-Sea, Essex

News of the incident broke when his friend, a singer named Yasmin, wrote on Ironik’s Twitter soon after the attack: ‘Ironik is in hospital. Has been stabbed and in hospital but he is ok.’
Yesterday, his manager Neil Ransome had to deny a fake internet report yesterday that Ironik had died after the attack.

He wrote on his Twitter; “It’s a fake website and complete nonsense, there’s some sick attention-seeking people out there, makes you shudder.

Born in Highgate, North London, Charters started DJing from an early age before releasing his first single So Nice three years ago.
However, he leaped to fame last year when his song Tiny Dancer, featuring Chipmunk and Sir Elton John, went to number three in the charts.

He recently teamed up with 90210 actress Jessica Lowndes on the single Falling In Love, which was released two weeks ago.

Two years ago, he was romantically linked to glamour model Danielle Lloyd after they were photographed attending several events together, but he insisted they were “just friends

[UPDATED] LimeWire is Back in the Game!

On 1st November 2010 – We posted that “Courts will shut down LimeWire” …read more

That took even less time than I expected. I had a feeling we’d see popular P2P client LimeWire again, but I didn’t think it would be this fast. Reports are surfacing that the software has already been resurrected by a group of self-named hackers. “Not only has a secret dev team reanimated the hugely popular client, but they have also made a few significant changes which make it better and more streamlined than before.”

“Shortly after the software was forced to shut down, a horde of piratical monkeys climbed aboard the abandoned ship, mended its sails, polished its cannons, and released it free to the community.” All dependencies on LimeWire LLC’s servers have been removed, all remote settings have been disabled, the Ask toolbar has been unbundled, and all features of LimeWire PRO have been activated for free. Thus, the creators claim that LimeWire Pirate Edition (LPE) will work better than the last stable version of the old client.

Even thought it looks more like the design they used back in 2007!

Ready steady… AXED

After 16 years the long-running cookery programme fronted by Ainsley Harriott will be no more. That’s right, the BBC have now confirmed Ready Steady Cook will no longer air after 2011.

Media Guardian report this as being apart of the BBC just trying to freshen up their daytime schedule. There will be no new series and repeats will cease next year.

After 15 years, 21 series and nearly 2,000 episodes, Ready Steady Cook has hung up its cooking aprons. I’m proud of the show, which will go down in history as the longest running cookery show on TV.

BBC Daytime is constantly looking at ways to innovate and refresh our programme formats and, while the series has been hugely popular on BBC2, it was felt that Ready Steady Cook has been taken as far as it could. This will help make way for new cookery shows including The Hairy Bikers’ Cook Off, as well as more drama like Moving On, The Indian Doctor and Land Girls, and current affairs programming, which I really want to be at the heart of Daytime. Ready Steady Cook fans will, however, still be able to enjoy repeats of the show as they will continue to be broadcast for some time yet.

Harriott says:I feel privileged to have been part of the Ready Steady Cook family for the past 15 years. I am immensely proud of its success as the longest-running cookery show on British television and will always look back on it with the fondest of memories.

Apple working on Desktop NFC Sync For iPhone 5

Near field Communication (NFC) may well be a powerful selling point for the forthcoming iPhone 5 as it has emerged that Apple may use the technology for some pretty unique purposes.

A source told Apple blog Cult of Mac that Apple is working on ways to use the iPhone 5 to take over any Apple Mac (and potentially any computers).

NFC has been limited for now to contactless mobile payments and identity management. Cult Of Mac says the plan is to use the iPhone 5 as an identity token with which a user can take over a machine (useful when doing hot desking).

The computer will load the users’s applications, settings and data, customising it to their own personal use. When the user leaves or if the iPhone 5 is moved out of range, the computer reverts back to its original state.

Whether NFC will actually be used here remains to be seen as it will very much depend on data transfer rates as well (you don’t want the sync to take minutes, but rather microseconds) and the phone needs to be within 10cm rather than say, a more convenient 50cm.

One has to wonder whether Bluetooth (which already equips most recent Apple laptops) or some sort of low power, short distance wireless technology like Zigbee, might not be more appropriate.
