The cast and crew of Emmerdale say goodbye to Danny Miller

The 21-year-old actor has been involved in some of the soap’s most dramatic storylines since he arrived in the Dales over 3 years ago.

And as he prepares to bid farewell to the role that saw him win several awards and hit the headlines for his acting skills, his fellow cast members and crew have decided to say goodbye in their own special way.

Miller was surprised at his leaving do when they screened a spoof video that sees Adam Thomas (Adam Barton) rap along to Written in the Stars, by Tinie Tempah, while Kelvin Fletcher (Andy Sugden) dons an afro to play the keyboard, shirtless.

Members of the Emmerdale team also don tracksuits like Miller’s character Aaron Livesy and swab themselves with tearsticks in reference to his numerous emotional plotlines.

Miller wrapped up filming on the soap last week and as he left the set for the last time he tweeted: “Can’t explain the emotions i feel at the moment!

He added: “It’s been a pleasure to play Aaron and I love you all for taking the character on and loving his storylines. Thank you so much for your support for me the last 4 years!

Miller has teased that Aaron’s departure from Emmerdale will be “amazing“, but “heartbreaking for some people“.

His final episode is due to air on April 5.

SOPA: Wikipedia Goes Dark

If you need to use Wikipedia for any urgent research, make sure you do it today – come tomorrow, you’ll be clean out of luck (for 24 hours)

The company announced today that in protest over SOPA, it will join Reddit and others on Wednesday for an all-day web “blackout” – which means that participating sites will be effectively off-line and inaccessible. The move comes as the firestorm over a highly controversial internet piracy bill in Washington gathers pace.

Wikimedia Foundation – English Wikipedia anti-SOPA blackout:
Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States – the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate – that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

Full Story – Wikimedia Foundation.

UPDATE 05:25 AM GMT;

Isn’t SOPA dead? Wasn’t the bill shelved, and didn’t the White House declare that it won’t sign anything that resembles the current bill?
No, SOPA and PIPA are not dead. On January 17th, SOPA’s sponsor said the bill will be discussed in early February. There are signs PIPA may be debated on the Senate floor next week. The threat of SOPA and PIPA remains, and the English Wikipedia community wants to send a strong message that such attacks on the free and open web are not welcome.

Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way?
The Wikipedia community, as part of their request to the Wikimedia Foundation to carry out this protest, asked us to ensure that we make English Wikipedia accessible in some way during an emergency. The English Wikipedia will be accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. Because the protest message is powered by JavaScript, it’s also possible to view Wikipedia by completely disabling JavaScript in your browser.

Mozilla retains Google as default search engine in Firefox

Summary: Mozilla and Google have renewed their friendship with a new search deal for Firefox.

Mozilla and Google are renewing their partnership with a new agreement regarding the default search engine in Firefox.

That would be Google, obviously, and it will stay that way for at least the next three years, according to the new deal.

Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs explained in a prepared statement, “Under this multi-year agreement, Google Search will continue to be the default search provider for hundreds of millions of Firefox users around the world.”

Other search engines that sit below Google within the Firefox browser are Yahoo, Bing, Amazon.com, eBay and Wikipedia.

Financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed except that it will provide “a significant and mutually beneficial revenue” stream for both parties.

To put the value of this relationship into at least one perspective, Mozilla relied heavily (perhaps too heavily) on Google search revenue in 2010. The Firefox search box has generated anywhere from 85 percent to 90 percent of Mozilla revenue in recent years.

AllThingsD reports that Google contributed approximately 84 percent of Mozilla’s $123 million in revenue last year.

Mozilla Posted the following:

We’re pleased to announce that we have negotiated a significant and mutually beneficial revenue agreement with Google. This new agreement extends our long term search relationship with Google for at least three additional years.

“Under this multi-year agreement, Google Search will continue to be the default search provider for hundreds of millions of Firefox users around the world,” said Gary Kovacs, CEO, Mozilla.

“Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come,” said Alan Eustace, Senior Vice President of Search, Google.

The specific terms of this commercial agreement are subject to traditional confidentiality requirements, and we’re not at liberty to disclose them.
